The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Malaysian Instant Noodles Of All Time 2015 Edition

When I visited Malaysia last October, I was asked by a newspaper reported when I thought a Malaysian top ten list might come out. I figured once I got to around 70 reviews I could probably put something together. As of today, I’ve reviewed 100 different varieties from Malaysia. What’s more, I am releasing this top ten list on Malaysia’s Independence Day! Hari Merdeka! Happy Birthday, Malaysia! I hope everyone enjoys this list, in my opinion the best of the best instant varieties Malaysia has to offer that I’ve tried yet.

#10: Ibumie Penang White CurryMee

Ibumie is a very popular brand in Malaysia. What I like about their CurryMee is that it covers all the bases: spicy, rich and flavorful curry. The levels of these prerequisite are such however that it’s accessible to most – not too spicy or strong. A good one to introduce people to Malaysian instant noodle flavor. Original review

#9: Ah Lai Penang Favourite White Curry Bihun

I found that the bihun version of Ah Lai’s White Curry was very enjoyable; the noodles come out just right and dance with the curry broth playfully. Balanced just right. Original review

#8: Mamee Chef Curry Laksa

Mamee Chef’s noodles use ‘mi tarik’ technology to emulate hand pulled noodles. Coupling that with a rich and tasty curry broth and garnish including tau pok, this is definitely one of my all time favorites. Original review

#7: The Bridge Penang White Curry Noodle

A noodle with excellent texture and chew along with a beautifully lustrous broth with strong flavor. Makes me wish I could’ve gotten more from Malaysia to bring home! Original review

#6: MyKuali Penang Hokkien Prawn Noodle

Hokkien Mee is a wonderfully unique flavor of Penang and is extremely well represented here. The broth is sweet and has a deep flavor of prawn as well as a spiciness. The provided fried onions are the best I’ve ever found in an instant noodle. Original review

#5: Mamee Chef Gold Recipe Mi Kari Seribu Rasa

This variety has it all – great noodles, a deep and beautiful color, and finally a flavor that makes me think of the exotic. Lots of cumin and other spices comer together here masterfully. Original review

#4: CarJEN Nyonya Curry Laksa

I’ve seen a lot of noodle packages but I must say this is by far the sexiest. What’s nice is that what’s inside is equally as awesome – a very tasty curry is augmented with coconut powder and a dipping sauce with nice bits of shrimp. Original review

#3: MyOri Malaysia Penang Green Curry Rice Vermicelli

This is something new I tried in the last few months that’s just left me speechless. The green curry broth is thick and so flavorful; perfect spiciness and perfect taste. What’s more, it pairs with rice vermicelli in a stunning way. Luxuriant and innovative. Original review

#2: MyKuali Penang White Curry Noodle

This is the variety and flavor that grabbed me and set my palate on Malaysia. The richness, thickness and strength of this broth is mind-blowing. The noodles are engorged on it and have a hearty gauge and chew. A real game changer. Original review

#1: MyKuali Penang Red Tom Yum Goong Noodle

This one takes the cake. It has such an authentic flavor; as soon as I tried it, I was whisked back to Langkawi – the thickness of this tom yum is amazing, as is its’ sweetness and spiciness. I half expect to find a stalk of lemongrass in the bowl. Original review

As always, if you know of a variety I should try, check THE BIG LIST to see if I already have, and if I haven’t, contact me! Hari Merdeka, Malaysia!

So every time I do a Top Ten list, I try to let the companies that make that list know. I usually post directly on their Facebook page a congratulatory message. Well, CarJEN’s J.J. Snek Mi Perisa BBQ made the new Top Ten Instant Noodle Snacks list, and I saw something neat on their page!

Last year, CarJEN’s Nyonya Curry Laksa made 4th place on the annual big Top Ten list. I still have to say I think that this product has the greatest looking packaging of any variety I’ve ever seen. The Otentiq Cheezy is what’s on the other side of the bag. These are reusable shopping bags, given away at events/promotions in Malaysia.

They also sent some samples – here’s the winning BBQ flavor snek mi.

They also sent the chicken variety! Thanks to Sugu and Nuril for sending these along!

The other day I got some samples from CarJEN – this one piqued my interest. First off, the ‘Improved Taste’ sticker – it actually if from the outside of a 4 pack but I figure since I always just do pics of the individual packs, I’d just unstick it and restick it. It was #4 on last year’s big The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Instant Noodles Of All Time 2015 Edition. Wonder what’s changed? Let’s have a look!

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Contains crustaceans. To prepare, cook the noodle block in 400ml boiling water for 2 minutes. Add in the soup paste and stir well. Add in the creamer and stir. Garnish with dipping sauce and enjoy!

The noodle block.

The paste sachet.

Has a nice and savory scent to it.

The dipping sauce sachet.

A nice shrimp scent.

A non-dairy creamer sachet.

I love this – coconut cream powder!

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts and tau pok. The noodles are thick and buxom with a absolutely wonderful firmness. They slurp up the broth immediately. The broth is just paradise; such a richness to it and a heat – not too much, not too little. I’m very impressed with these yet again – spectacular! 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 9557226082989.

#2015: E-Zee Perisa Kari Mi Segera Improved Taste!

A while back, I did a Meet The Manufacturer with CarJEN Foods. I tried their E-Zee Curry and thought it was quite good. It got 4 stars and CarJEN asked about putting my logo on their packaging. We made a deal and there it is! Now, they’ve changed the recipe. It seems this is a trend in the Malaysian market right now – kind of fun since it’s like a re-review but a second shot for these companies for a better score with a new recipe. Let’s check this one out!

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add noodle block to 400ml boiling water and cook for 2 minutes. Add in sachet contents. Stir and enjoy!

The noodle block. I was told the block now does not contain MSG.

The soup base sachet.

My room smells like curry now!

This is a new addition – crushed red pepper.

This stuff has a seriously strong scent.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, hard boiled egg, coriander, tau pok and Dodo fish balls. The noodles plumped up well and were nice and springy. The broth – ah, the broth. Here’s the improvement! The curry taste is much stronger (the old version called for 450ml water and this one calls for 400ml) – not only that, the little sachet of chilli pepper flake just puts it over the top. It’s hot – real hot – like walking around the living room as my mouth and lips are burning saying ‘ooh’ repeatedly hot. Guess they’ll have to reprint the labels! 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 9557226082309.

As with some other varieties, CarJEN has recently kicked up their noodle game a skosh by changing the recipe. I’m not exactly sure what’s changed here – I’ll let my tastebuds let you know! Let’s check it out!

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add noodle block to 400ml boiling water and cook for 2 minutes. Add in contents of sachet. Stir and enjoy!

The noodle block.

The soup base sachet.

Smells like curry!

A sachet of cheese powder.

(2)

Lot sof it!

Chilli powder.

Has a strong and spicy scent.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Dodo fishball, Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, coriander, crushed red pepper, tau pok and medium cheddar cheese. The noodles are excellent as CarJEN’s usually are. A comfortable chew and familiar gauge. The broth this time around is a bit less salty which I found very nice. It also seems a little richer as well. The nice hit of spiciness, the creaminess of the cheese and the curry all come together and sing to me tastebuds! Besides – spicy curry and cheese – can’t go wrong with that. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 9557226083047.

This one was sent by CarJEN of Malaysia – thanks! I did a Meet The Manufacturer with them a while back and since then, they’ve sent me products when they come out. I’m pretty sure this has been out for a little while, but today will be my first taste. Asam translates to sour (usually like tamarind) and pedas translates to spicy, hence, sour and spicy. Let’s give it a try!

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add noodle block to 400ml boiling water and cook for 2 minutes. Add in sachet contents. Stir and enjoy!

The noodle block.

The soup base sachet.

Has a kind of sour and spicy scent!

Finished (click to enlarge). Added chilli padi, Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, coriander and tau pok. The noodles were quite good for a standard gauge instant and worked just right – a little chewier than many which I liked. The broth indeed had a sour and spicy flavor to it and a kind of tomato/mackerel sauce element like asam laksa. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 9557226082828.

Here’s another new recipe change for the CarJEN product line. The change they made to the Cheezy Curry was great – I liked the Cheezy Mushroom alot when I tried it – curious how it will do with new changes? Let’s find out!

Here’s the pack of the package (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add noodle block to 400ml boiling water and cook 2 minutes. Add in mushrooj sachet contents and cook another minute. Stir in cheese powder. Sprinkle on parsley flake. Enjoy!

The noodle block.

Cheese powder!

Lots of light cheese powder!

Mushrooms!

Little bits.

The garnish sachet.

Parsley.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added mushrooms and cheddar cheese. the noodles were very good – light on the chew and lent themselves perfectly to the broth, which was a creamy cheddar with bits of mushroom appearing here and there. The flavor had a nice little black pepper note to it as well. The parsley was a nice touch. Still a favorite of mine. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars.  EAN bar code 9557226083054.

The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Spiciest Instant Noodles Of All Time 2016 Edition

Every year, I review a ton of instant noodles – and every year I come out with quite a few lists. This list tends to change the least of all my lists – I’ve had a lot of spicy instant noodles in my time and just seems like nobody’s getting any spicier products to market. Could be that they don’t want to melt people’s faces off perhaps. Anyways, here’s this year’s list – the spiciest varieties out of over 2,100 reviews. Enjoy – if you dare!

A video presentation of The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Spiciest Instant Noodles Of All Time 2016 Edition.

#10: Nongshim Jinjja Jinjja – South Korea

While still not available in the United States, Jinjja Jinjja is back in South Korea! This one packs a serious punch of heat along with pork, peanut and black sesame seeds. Original review here

#9: JML Emperor Instant Noodles Spicy Chicken – China

I wasn’t expecting this one to be extremely spicy at the outset and then was in for a ride. Very very hot – augmented with a large sachet of coarse chilli peppers. Original review here

#8: emart Dare You! Habanero Jjamppong – South Korea

Extreme heat is paired with nice bit of seafood broth and lots of bits of seafood. All the fire and flavor melded together with thick ramyun noodles make it hot as well as delicious. This one comes in at 1,960 SHU (Scoville Heat Units). Original review here

#7: MyKuali Penang White Curry Noodle – Malaysia

MyKuali’s new recipe added a big punch of heat to their already amazing and groundbreaking Penang White Curry Noodle. Thick almost saucelike broth fires up the palate and includes a generous amount of garlic this time. Original review here

#6: Ching’s Secret Hot Garlic Instant Noodles – India

When I found this one at a local Indian market, I was very enthused. I thought to myself ‘hey, I like garlic!’ I kind of expected a salty, buttery and almost fettucini kind of thing. But no – this innocuous looking plate of noodles was violently spicy! Super hot garlic spiciness just builds and builds! Original review here

#5: Mi E-Zee Perisa Kari Mi Segera – Malaysia

The noodles plumped up well and were nice and springy. The broth – ah, the broth. Here’s the improvement! The curry taste is much stronger (the old version called for 450ml water and this one calls for 400ml) – not only that, the little sachet of chilli pepper flake just puts it over the top. It’s hot – real hot – like walking around the living room as my mouth and lips are burning saying ‘ooh’ repeatedly hot. Original review

#4: Paldo Teumsae Ramyun – South Korea

On the list for four years now! Another South Korean ramyun with serious kick to it. This isn’t to be trifled with!  Teumsae has restaurants in South Korea which serve up some seriously spicy fare. I really like the text underneath the word Teumsae which reads, ‘Flavor. Culture. Human’ Original review here

#3: Samyang Foods Buldak Bokkeummyeon – South Korea

I would say that I’ve seen dozens of videos on YouTube showing people competitively eating this one. This stuff is extremely hot. Another brothless variety and it really packs a punch as well as has a nice taste to it. Thick ramyun noodles round everything out nicely and will transmit the spicy sauce to your tongue. Original review here

#2: Paldo Bulnak Bokkummyun Spicy Fried Octopus Ramyun – South Korea

See that little octopus on the package with the smile on his face? He’s laughing. Laughing as he watches you sweat as you eat this ultra spicy ramyun! I’m not kidding this one was over the top spicy! Bring a fire extinguisher. Original review here

#1: emart Dare You! Habanero Ramyun – South Korea

For the fourth year running, this stuff tops the list. Despite a packaging design change, you should still heed the warnings; habanero pepper top right corner, temperature gauge and screaming person, black packaging… Yeah – it’s not one to underestimate; this is violently hot. The broth just keeps delivering the heat and it’s just insane. Try licking a lit candle – I swear this stuff is hotter! Original review here

#2129: CarJEN Hot & Spicy Dry Curry With Chives Soup

CarJEN has come up with something new! This one has not only a dry mee goreng, but a companion soup that you can enjoy alongside it. I’ve seen this before, but never in Malaysian varieties. There’s a popular Taiwanese instant that has a noodle and a soup separate kind of thing going too. Very curious about this one indeed. Let’s see how this all works!

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add the noodle block to 400ml boiling water and cook for 2 minutes. Drain, saving 60ml water. Add the paste to the water and stir well. Add this to the noodles and stir well. Add in chili flake. This completes the noodle instructions. For the chives soup, add sachet contents to 200ml boiling water and stir well. Enjoy!

The noodle block.

The paste sachet.

Thick with a spicy curry scent!

The chives soup base.

Looks like seasoning and chives.

Chilli flake.

Spicy stuff!

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, baked chicken and coriander.Starting with the noodles, they’re good and chewy with a nice quantity. They work very well in a mee moreng situation. The flavor – so there’s that chilli flake sachet. My wife made this for me on Father’s Day and used it all – spicy to the max! But I was curious today so I tried it without the chilli flakes. It has a very luxuriant curry taste I really like – a nice strong curry with a very good Hokkien Prawn kind of hit to it. As for the chives soup, it’s a nice little slurp between bites – not overly salty and has a lot of bits of chives in there. I should mention, however: if you’re looking for respite from the spicy heat of the noodles, look elsewhere! The broth drives that spicy taste deeper into your tastebuds! This was really fun to make and eat! 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 9557226083719.

Curious about where these instant noodles come from? Well, they’re made in Melaka, Malaysia. Where’s Melaka? Perhaps this map would help!

Meet The Manufacturer: #1584: E-mi Mi Perencah Asam Pedas

I’m sure your first question might be ‘what is asam pedas’ so let me break it down for you. Pedas means spicy. Asam is tamarind. The two together refer to a dish which is both sour and spicy. Here’s what wikipedia has to say about asam pedas:

The main ingredients in asam pedas are usually seafood or freshwater fish. They are cooked in asam (tamarind) fruit juice with chilli and different spices. The cooking process involves soaking the pulp of the tamarind fruit until it is soft and then squeezing out the juice for cooking the fish. Asam paste may be substituted for convenience. Various vegetables such as terong or brinjals (Indian eggplants), okra and tomatoes are added. Fish and seafood (such as mackerel, red snapper, tuna, gourami, pangasius or cuttlefish), either whole body or sometimes only the fish heads are added to make a spicy and tart fish stew. It is important that the fish remain intact for serving so generally the fish is added last.[1]

It’s a wet and windy day outdoors and I thought this one sounded very nice for this weather. Let’s give it a try!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Contains chicken. to prepare, add noodle block and soup base sachet contents to 400ml boiling water for 3 minutes. Stir and enjoy! It also says you can just enjoy it straight out of the bag.

The noodle block.

The soup base sachet.

Has a nice scent of tamarind and spiciness.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added shrimp, sweet onion, coriander, mung bean sprout and mint. The noodles have a nice gauge as well as taste. The broth has a very good contrast of spicy and sour. The spiciness is pretty decent – nice to see! The sour taste is very good as well. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars.  EAN bar code 9557226082521.

Meet The Manufacturer: #1585: CarJEN Nyonya Curry Laksa

$
0
0

Here’s the new CarJEN Nyonya Curry Laksa! This one’s supposed to be pretty good and comes with a sachet of sambal dipping sauce. So to start, let’s see what wikipedia has to say about the term Nyonya:

From the Malay influence a unique “Nyonya” cuisine has developed using typical Malay spices. Examples are Chicken Kapitan, a dry chicken curry, and Inchi Kabin, a Nyonya version of fried chicken. Pindang bandeng is a common fish soup served in Indonesia during the Chinese New Year and so is a white round mooncake from Tangerang which is normally used during the Autumn Festival. Swikee Purwodadi is a Peranakan dish from Purwodadi, it is a frog soup dish.

Nyonya Laksa is a very popular dish in Singapore and Malacca, Malaysia while another variant called Asam Laksa is famous in Penang, Malaysia. Pongteh is also another popular and savoury dish of the Peranakan community. The main ingredient is onion, black mushroom (optional), chicken (at times pork is used instead of chicken, hence it’s called Babi Pongteh) and fermented bean sauce. The Malaccan Nyonyas are well known for this dish.

Okay now let’s find out about laksa – wikipedia says:

Laksa is a popular spicy noodle soup in the Peranakan cuisine,[1][2] which is a combination of Chinese and Malay cuisine. It can be found in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.[3] CNN Travel ranked Penang Assam Laksa 7th out of the 50 most delicious food in the world.[4]

The unique fature of this instant noodle is the sambal dipping sauce – again, I’ll reference wikipedia about sambal:

Fresh chilis are pounded together with toasted shrimp paste (belacan) in a stone mortar to which sugar and lime juice are added. Originally, limau kesturi or calamansi lime, is used but since this is scarce outside of Southeast Asia, normal lime is used as a replacement.[7] Tomatoes are optional ingredients. Sometimes, sweet sour mangoes or equivalent local fruits are also used. It can be eaten with cucumbers or ulam (leafy herbs) in a meal of rice and other dishes. A Malaysian-Chinese version is to fry belacan with chili.[8]

Sounds like we have a lot of flavors going on in this one! Let’s check out the new CarJEN Nyonya Curry Laksa!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Contains shrimp. To prepare, ad noodle block to 400ml boiling water and cook for 2 minutes. Add in curry paste sachet content and stir in, then the creamer sachet content and combine that as well. Garnish with the contents of the sambal sachet and enjoy!

The noodle block.

There’s so many large sachets that they get their own sachet to contain them all!

The Nyonya Curry Laksa paste sachet.

Has a kind of sweet scent to it.

A non-dairy creamer sachet.

Coconut powder – smells like coconut!

Finally, the sambal dipping sauce.

Has a strong shrimp scent to it.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added mint leaf, shrimp, vegetable ball, mung bean sprout, sweet onion and tau pok (tofu puff). The noodles have a very standard and familiar quality to them with just a little extra backbone; they are easily broken by pursing the lips, however they are not spongy or mushy. The broth is superb – firstly, the coconut creamer gives everything a nice richness. The Nyonya Curry Paste adds a nice flavor – sweet and colorful. The sambal has lots of nice bits of shrimp in the paste as well as a little heat and citrus. This was absolutely fantastic stuff. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 9557226082989.

Meet The Manufacturer: #1586: J.J. Snek Mi Perisa Ayam

Here’s the other variety of J.J. snack noodles CarJEN produces. Ayam translates to chicken. The mighty chicken seems to be the universally accepted flavor in the world. I was just wondering – how many are there? Chickens, I mean; how many chickens are there on the planet? I typed in world population of chickens into Google and it spat this out instantaneously:

In 2009 the annual chicken population in factory farms was estimated at 50 billion, with 6 billion raised in the European Union, over 9 billion raised in the United States and more than 7 billion in China.

I searched to find out how many people there are and it said the world’s human population is roughly 7.2 billion. That’s a lot of us, and a lot of chickens. – about 7 of them for every person, everywhere. It kind of interesting to think about all the resources are needed to handle this huge population of chickens – feed, water, waste etc. Pretty amazing. But anyways, let’s have a look at this chicken flavored J. J. Snek Mi Perisa Ayam!

The above picture is of one of the individual packs that are inside the first picture with is a bag of ten.

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Contains chicken. To prepare, simply open the bag and eat, or crush contents in the bag and then open. Enjoy!

The uncrushed noodle block.

Finished (click image to enlarge). The noodles have a very nice crunch without being too hard. They’ve got a nice chicken flavor to them. An easy to enjoy snack. Giving this snack a score of 3.75 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 9557226062332.
